Havet was a friend of Ernest Renan, during the work and the themes they dealt with are quite similar.
Renan, during Havet's funeral, will say in his praise: "The illustrious colleague to whom we say the last farewell today was an eminent servant of the greatest work of our century, the obstinate search for the truth. [...] He believed, and I believe like him, that the time of the unofficial veils is past, that it is useless to distinguish between the truths good to speak and those which are not. ".
